In the process of completing a carving, I sketch, draw, and redraw the image several times. I do thumbnails and practice elements with white ink on black paper. In FROM GRACE, I created a series of value drawings in graphite directly on the block before inking it to carve, and once I had carved it, the drawings were gone forever, reduced to hundreds of little shavings. I knew there’d be no way to get individual pages as relief prints, so I captured high-quality photos of each page’s drawings and made this “Ghost Edition” of FROM GRACE.
